These would be the higher class, more fashionable and sophisticated Mennonite girls - probably “town girls” and not farmer’s daughters.  A bit of snobbery was not uncommon even in the Mennonite culture.

The Kitchen was the woman’s domain and all Mennonite women were expected to master the skills of cooking, canning and baking.  Sometimes they have become competitive and were proud of their delicious results.  Pride is the biggest sin - it leads to all other sins.
